Record Power Faults
8 documented Record Power faults, covering Envoy, DML250, CL4, DML305, PT260, CL2, CL3 and BS250. Each entry sets out the symptom as owners report it, the most likely cause, the checks that confirm or rule it out, and whether the repair is worth doing. Everything here is compiled and cross-checked from manufacturer documentation and owner reports — the sources are listed on every page.
Documented faults
- Record Power Envoy
The turning tool suddenly digs into the spinning workpiece or gets grabbed by it, rather than cutting smoothly
Record Power's own manual names four specific causes, and none of them is a fault with the lathe itself: a blunt tool, the tool rest set too low, the tool rest too far back from the timber, or the wrong tool for the cut being attempted
Blades & Alignment 2026-09-28 - Record Power DML250
The DML250 mini lathe vibrates or shakes noticeably while turning, rather than running smoothly
Record Power's own troubleshooting table names five distinct causes for lathe vibration, from a simple out-of-balance workpiece to worn spindle bearings — not one single fault
Mechanical & Motion 2026-09-22 - Record Power CL4
The lathe stops mid-turn and the main spindle bearing is locked solid, with no give when turned by hand
The main spindle bearing has seized inside its race — wear, contamination or age — rather than a fault in the motor or drive belt
Mechanical & Motion 2026-09-21 - Record Power DML305
Turned spindles come off the lathe with a visible spiral or thread-like ridge running along them, instead of a smooth surface
Record Power's own support answer names centre alignment first, not bearing wear — a common owner assumption their own knowledge base article directly addresses and rules against as the most likely cause
Blades & Alignment 2026-09-16 - Record Power PT260
The PT260 won't start at all — the motor doesn't run when the switch is pressed, in either planing or thicknessing mode
One of the PT260's three safety microswitches isn't being closed by the table lock, the dust extraction hood, or the swing-over outlet — the interlock working as designed, not a fault
Guards & Safety 2026-09-15 - Record Power CL2
The lathe stops during turning and the main spindle bearing is locked solid, refusing to turn
The main bearing has seized on the spindle, usually from wear or contamination inside the bearing race, rather than a fault elsewhere in the drive
Mechanical & Motion 2026-09-07 - Record Power CL3
Too much play in the headstock spindle, with vibration that makes the lathe difficult to turn on
Headstock bearing clearance opening up with use — on the CL3 the bearings are designed to be adjusted to take up that wear, not replaced at the first sign of movement
Mechanical & Motion 2026-09-01 - Record Power BS250
Bandsaw cuts wander away from the fence — the blade drifts sideways through the cut no matter how carefully the wood is fed
A dull or unevenly-set blade, insufficient tension, or misadjusted guides — drift is almost always setup, not a machine fault
