The symptom pattern
Henry is running normally, then simply stops — no warning, no unusual noise beforehand, just silence mid-clean. Switching it off and straight back on does nothing. To most owners this looks like the motor has died outright, especially on an older machine that’s been reliable for years.
What’s actually happening
Henry’s motor has a thermal overload cutout that trips automatically when airflow through the machine is restricted enough to let the motor run hot. It’s a deliberate safety feature, not a fault, and it’s triggered far more often by a full bag, a clogged filter, or a blocked hose than by anything wrong with the motor itself. The trap is that Numatic bags and filters restrict airflow well before they look obviously full or dirty, so the cutout can trip on a bag or filter that still looks like it has capacity left.
Working through it
Work through the airflow path in order: check the bag first (replace or empty at around two-thirds full, not when it looks packed), then the filter (due roughly every six months regardless of appearance), then run a rod down the full length of the hose to clear anything lodged out of sight. Once the airway is genuinely clear, the cutout still won’t reset immediately — leave the machine off for a full 30 minutes to let the motor cool, then try again. Restarting too soon looks identical to a failed reset and leads a lot of owners to condemn a perfectly good motor.
Verdict
Airflow restriction tripping the thermal cutout accounts for the large majority of these “dead” Henry reports, and it costs nothing to rule out. Only treat it as a genuine motor or PCB fault once the bag, filter, and hose are all confirmed clear and a proper cool-down period hasn’t fixed it.
